No error message on screen
it just doesn't login when we enter a valid user/password.
can login as local user.
Turned out to be the local system clock synchronising off the apple timeserver was >5min drift from the AD server.
I checked the AD server time and it is/was correct time..
Can only surmise that the mac (off over weekend) clock had drifted and was failing to update time from apple for some reason or that apple's time server was out (unlikely).
Logging on as a local admin and pointing the time sync at the AD server updated the time.
Quick reboot allowed logon ok.
